Browse and edit data safely

For working with rows directly: finding the ones you need, changing a few values, and doing it on a production database without surprises. Edits wait until you save, and each connection decides how careful TablePro is before a statement runs.

Paid features on this page: Data Rewind (Starter). Everything else here is free.

Find the rows you need

Sorting and paging run on the server, so a large table opens at its first page. Above 100,000 rows the row count is an estimate, with Count Exactly when you need the real number.

Filters and highlight rules

The filter bar (⌘⇧F) builds a WHERE clause from 18 operators, from = and BETWEEN to REGEX, or takes a raw SQL condition. Save a filter for a table and bring it back later without running it. Highlight rules colour rows or cells by their values, like conditional formatting in a spreadsheet, and stay on this Mac.

The orders table with paid rows tinted green and refunded rows tinted orange, and the highlight rules popover open.

Foreign keys and JSON

Follow a foreign key to the row it points to in a new tab, or preview that row in a popover. When you edit a foreign key column, the value picker lists the referenced rows by the columns you choose, such as a customer’s last and first name. JSON values open in a viewer with a tree for finding your way and a text mode for editing.

Change data, then save once

Cell edits, new rows and deletions wait in the tab, marked, until you press ⌘S; nothing is sent before that. Preview SQL (⌘⇧P) lists the statements with their values filled in. Saving sends them with bound parameters, in one transaction where the engine allows, and checks that each statement changed the number of rows it expected; if one did not, the save rolls back.

  • Cell editors for the column’s type: a date and time picker, ENUM and SET lists, arrays, JSON, a hex editor for binary values, and an image viewer.
  • Undo and redo in each tab until you save.
  • Query results can be edited when the query reads a single table, with no join, CTE or UNION.
  • Copy rows as CSV, JSON, Markdown, an IN list, or INSERT and UPDATE statements.

Safe Mode for production connections

Each connection has a Safe Mode level: Silent, Alert, Alert (Full), Safe Mode, Safe Mode (Full) and Read-Only. New connections start at Silent, where statements run as written. Alert asks before a write runs, the Safe Mode levels also ask for Touch ID or your Mac password, the Full levels ask before reads too, and Read-Only refuses writes and turns editing off. Safe Mode is free.

At every level, DROP, TRUNCATE and a DELETE without WHERE stop and ask first. Some things raise a connection’s level while they apply: an engine that only reads, Agent mode, which raises it to at least Alert, and a minimum level your organisation sets through device management (MDM).

Data Rewind

Data Rewind: Starter plan

Data Rewind keeps the values a save replaced, so Restore Previous Values can put them back. A review sheet first shows what will happen to each row, including rows that changed after your save, and the restore runs through Safe Mode, in one transaction where the engine allows. A restore can itself be restored.

The saved values stay on this Mac for 7 days, encrypted with a key kept in your Keychain, and are never synced. When a plan ends, TablePro stops recording saves and Restore Previous Values shows an alert instead.

The Restore Previous Values review sheet, with three rows marked Will restore and one marked Changed since the save.

Documents and keys

Not every engine stores rows. On MongoDB you insert and edit whole documents as Extended JSON, remove a field from a document, and rename or remove a field across a collection from the Structure tab. On Redis you rename keys, set TTLs and edit string values in the grid, add a string, hash, list, set or sorted-set key, and change the other types with commands in the editor.

On iPhone and iPad

In the iPhone and iPad app, rows show as cards you can sort, search and filter with AND and OR, and tapping a foreign key previews the row it points to. You can edit a row, set a value to NULL or DEFAULT, insert rows and delete them with a swipe; editing and deleting need a primary key.

Safe Mode there has its own levels, Off, Confirm Writes and Read-Only, with Off as the default for new connections. Staged edits, Preview SQL, highlight rules and Data Rewind are in the Mac app only.

Limits worth knowing

  • Data Rewind is not a backup. It does not undo triggers, cascades or changes made outside TablePro, and it cannot restore rows without a primary key, values over 1 MB or values the server computed.
  • An UPDATE without WHERE is an ordinary write: it asks first only at Alert or a stricter level.
  • On MongoDB, Redis, etcd and SAP HANA, Safe Mode counts every statement as a write, so Alert asks before reads too and Read-Only blocks them.
  • The result of a join, a CTE or a UNION is read-only in the grid; open the table to edit it.
