TablePro vs MongoDB Compass

MongoDB Compass is MongoDB’s own free GUI, for exploring data, building aggregation pipelines and studying a collection’s schema. TablePro is an open-source client that connects to MongoDB next to SQL databases, Redis and other engines, with optional paid features on the Mac.

The short answer

Looking for an alternative to MongoDB Compass on the Mac? This is when each client fits.

Choose TablePro if

  • MongoDB is one of several databases you use, next to PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server or Redis, and you want one client for all of them.
  • You like a mongosh-style shell, with variables, loops and autocomplete for collections, field paths and operators.
  • You want to rename or remove a field across a whole collection, with every statement shown before it runs.
  • You want an AI assistant with the provider you choose, in the cloud or on your Mac, and an MCP server for outside AI clients.

Choose MongoDB Compass if

  • MongoDB is your only database, and you want MongoDB’s own tool, free.
  • You build aggregation pipelines stage by stage and want a preview after each stage.
  • You study a collection’s schema, or model collections and their relationships in a diagram.
  • You want a visual explain plan and live server metrics for MongoDB.
  • You also work on Windows or Linux.

At a glance

Compass’s installation guide lists MongoDB 7.0 or later. Its code is published under the SSPL-1.0.

Where MongoDB Compass is stronger

  • Compass is MongoDB’s own GUI, and it is free.Source 1
  • Aggregation pipelines are built stage by stage, with a preview of the data after each stage.Source 1
  • It samples a collection’s documents to show field types, date ranges and frequent values, and draws an entity-relationship diagram of a database’s collections.Source 1Source 7
  • Explain plans are visual, and live server metrics are built in.Source 1
  • It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux.Source 4

Where TablePro differs

  • One client covers MongoDB next to PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server, Redis and other engines. See the supported databases.
  • The query tab is a JavaScript shell that accepts mongosh syntax, and a variable you define stays available in every tab on the connection.
  • The Structure tab renames or removes a field across a whole collection, with each change shown first in Preview SQL.
  • The AI assistant works with the AI provider you choose, in the cloud or on your Mac, and the MCP server lets outside AI clients use your saved connections. Both are free. Compass’s AI features use Azure OpenAI.Source 1Source 6
  • Each connection has a Safe Mode level. On MongoDB, every statement counts as a write, so the stricter levels confirm or block each one.

What TablePro does not do

  • There is no stage-by-stage aggregation editor: you write aggregate() in the shell.
  • There is no schema analysis, no plan diagram and no server metrics view for MongoDB.
  • Transactions, GridFS and change streams are not supported.
  • MongoDB connections cannot be opened in the iPhone and iPad app.
  • There is no TablePro app for Windows or Linux.

Switching from MongoDB Compass

TablePro has no importer for Compass. Paste the connection string you use in Compass, starting with mongodb:// or mongodb+srv://, into File > Import > Import from URL…

  • A host ending in .mongodb.net turns on SRV and TLS for you, which MongoDB Atlas requires.
  • Set Auth Database when your user is defined in admin but you browse another database.
  • Passwords go into the macOS Keychain, and query history starts fresh in TablePro.

Questions

Can I build aggregation pipelines in TablePro?

Yes, by writing them: aggregate() runs in the shell, with autocomplete for collections, field paths and operators. There is no stage-by-stage editor with a preview after each stage, and that is where Compass is stronger.

Which AI does each use?

Compass’s natural language queries and its assistant use Azure OpenAI, and you can turn AI features off in its settings. TablePro’s AI assistant uses the provider you choose, including a model on your Mac, and is free in the Mac app. Read about AI in TablePro.

Is TablePro free for MongoDB?

Yes. MongoDB and the other supported engines, the AI assistant and the MCP server are free in the Mac app. Paid plans add optional features such as Compare & Sync, Query Insights, Data Rewind and iCloud Sync. See pricing.
