TablePro vs MySQL Workbench

MySQL Workbench is Oracle’s free, open-source tool for MySQL. Version 26.7 rebuilt it on MySQL Shell, and Oracle no longer maintains Workbench 8.0. TablePro is an open-source client for MySQL, MariaDB and other engines, with a separate iPhone and iPad app and optional paid features on the Mac.

The short answer

Looking for an alternative to MySQL Workbench on the Mac? This is when each client fits.

Choose TablePro if

  • You also use MariaDB, PostgreSQL, SQL Server, SQLite or Redis, and want one client for all of them.
  • You still run MySQL 8.0 servers. TablePro connects to them, while the new Workbench supports MySQL 8.4 and later.
  • Your Mac has an Intel processor. TablePro has a build for Intel and one for Apple silicon.
  • You want an AI assistant and an MCP server, free in the Mac app, with the AI provider you choose.
  • You want a free iPhone and iPad app that connects to MySQL and MariaDB.

Choose MySQL Workbench if

  • You want Oracle’s own tool for MySQL, free and open source.
  • You like notebooks that mix queries, results and notes, with JavaScript and TypeScript as well as SQL.
  • You use MySQL Enterprise Backup and want to schedule and restore backups from a desktop app.
  • You are moving to MySQL HeatWave on OCI and want a guided migration.
  • You also work on Windows or Linux and want the same tool on each.

At a glance

MySQL Workbench 26.7 is a new generation built on MySQL Shell, and Oracle says not every feature of Workbench 8.0 is in it yet. Version 8.0.47 is the last release of Workbench 8.0.

Where MySQL Workbench is stronger

  • MySQL Workbench is Oracle’s own tool for MySQL, free and open source under the GPL.Source 2
  • Its SQL notebooks mix queries, results and notes in one document, and run JavaScript and TypeScript as well as SQL.Source 1
  • With MySQL Enterprise Backup, it creates, schedules and restores full and incremental backups.Source 5
  • The HeatWave Migration Assistant guides a move to MySQL HeatWave on OCI.Source 1
  • It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux.Source 2

Where TablePro differs

  • One client covers MySQL, MariaDB and other engines, such as PostgreSQL, SQL Server, SQLite and Redis. See the supported databases.
  • TablePro connects to MySQL 8.0 servers too. Oracle supports MySQL 8.4 and later in the new Workbench, and says older versions may work.Source 3
  • It runs on Intel Macs as well as Apple silicon, with a separate build for each. The new Workbench’s Mac download is for Apple silicon only.Source 2
  • Backup Dump runs mysqldump and Restore Dump runs mysql, so backups need no MySQL Enterprise Backup. Both are free.Source 5
  • The AI assistant and the MCP server are free in the Mac app, with the AI provider you choose.
  • A free iPhone and iPad app connects to MySQL and MariaDB, with no in-app purchases.

What TablePro does not do

  • There is no TablePro app for Windows or Linux.
  • There are no notebooks, and MySQL connections run SQL, not JavaScript or TypeScript.
  • TablePro has no MySQL Enterprise Backup integration and no migration assistant for MySQL HeatWave.
  • It connects to MySQL over TCP only, not through a local socket file.
  • Some features are paid. Starter adds features such as Compare & Sync, Query Insights, Data Rewind and iCloud Sync, while MySQL Workbench is free.Source 2

Switching from MySQL Workbench

TablePro has no importer for MySQL Workbench. Add each connection by hand: fill in the connection form, or paste a URL that starts with mysql:// into File > Import > Import from URL…

  • Set up an SSH tunnel on the connection’s Network tab, with jump hosts if you need them.
  • If a project keeps its database settings in a file such as .env or wp-config.php, File > Import > Open Project Folder… reads them and opens the connection form filled in.
  • Passwords go into the macOS Keychain, and query history starts fresh in TablePro.

Questions

Is MySQL Workbench 8.0 still maintained?

No. Oracle says Workbench 8.0 has reached end of life and will have no new releases, and 8.0.47 is its last version. Oracle asks its users to move to MySQL Workbench 26.7, a rebuild that does not yet have every feature of Workbench 8.0.

Does TablePro work with MySQL 8.0 and MariaDB?

Yes. TablePro connects to MySQL 8.0, to later versions and to MariaDB through the same driver. Oracle supports MySQL 8.4 and later in the new Workbench, and says older versions may work. Read about MySQL in TablePro.

Does MySQL Workbench run on an Intel Mac?

The Mac download of version 26.7 is for Apple silicon only. TablePro has a separate build for Intel Macs. Download TablePro.

Is TablePro free like MySQL Workbench?

Free to use. MySQL, MariaDB and the other supported engines, the AI assistant and the MCP server cost nothing, and the code is open source under the AGPLv3. A Starter or Team plan adds optional features to the Mac app, such as Compare & Sync, Query Insights, Data Rewind and iCloud Sync. See pricing.
